(November 23, 2022) – In keeping with our commitment to empower Ghanaians in the Diaspora through civic and political action, Ghana Diaspora PAC today celebrates in the historic victories of three candidates of Ghanaian descent in the 2022 mid-term elections: Delegate Adrian Boafo (MD-23), State Rep. Allen Buansi (NC-56), and Councilman Pious Ali to the Portland Maine City Council.
Founders of the Ghana Diaspora Public Action Committee released the following statement:

Allen Buansi brings years of experience as a member of Chapel Hill Town Council and a civil rights lawyer to create a North Carolina that is affordable, accessible, and inclusive. His leadership has been widely recognized; he was named one of Chapel Hill Magazine’s Top Influencers of 2018. Governor Roy Cooper appointed him to the Local Government Retirement System Board of Trustees, and he has served on this Board since 2018. He has also served on the State Advisory Board of Common Cause. He has also been intentional in creating opportunities for others through the Training for Action and Progress (TAP) program. This program is geared toward civically engaging young people and people of color and developing a pipeline to town advisory boards and to elected office.
Pious Ali is a dedicated public servant, assertive and pragmatic leader with a compassionate diversified skill set in community organizing, activism and civic engagement, Pious is a Youth and Community Engagement Specialist at the University of Southern Maine’s Muskie School of Public Service ‘s Portland Empowered and has spent the better part of his career focused on community engagement. He has created a meaningful and ongoing dialogue across cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, and faith-based barriers. Mr. Ali is the first African-born Muslim American to be elected to a public office in Maine, becoming a member of the city’s elected Board of Public Education in 2013.
Adrian Boafo has spent his professional career working for Members of the United States House of Representatives. First, he joined the House Democratic Caucus as a press intern under the leadership of then Representative Xavier Becerra (CA-34). In November 2019, Adrian was elected to serve the residents of District 3 and became the youngest serving Mayor Pro Tem of Bowie. Adrian believes that all families in District 23 ought to have a strong advocate in Annapolis. Adrian believes that there is so much more we can do to create new jobs, protect our environment, re-imagine public safety, and increase health equity throughout Maryland.
